Pinturas Rupestres

Algunas ilustraciones que realicé para el libro Pinturas Rupestres de la colección Viajeros Somos, del Instituto de Investigaciones Culturales • Museo de la UABC, donde hemos trabajado directamente con el departamento de coordinación editorial. Lo terminamos hace unos meses pero hasta hace poco recibimos nuestros ejemplares impresos. Aún nos quedan 4 tomos por realizar, ¡muy divertido!

Some illustrations I did for the book titled  Pinturas Rupestres, part of a children's book collection named Viajeros Somos. Our client is the Institute for Cultural Research and Museum of the UABC (Autonomous University of Baja California) working directly with the editorial department. We finished it a few months ago but we just received our printed copies. We still have 4 volumes to design and illustrate, very fun!

   El fiel amigo de Frodo. Estuve unos días fuera de la ciudad pero regreso con una de las escenas más memorables del libro y de la película. Es curioso que Sam (Sean Astin), a diferencia de los otros hobbits, no imita un acento inglés y no creo que haya sido por falta de habilidad. Fuera de eso, creo que hizo un buen trabajo, era un personaje muy exigente en cuestión de emociones y actividad física, a diferencia de otros tantos que ha hecho a lo largo de su carrera. Definitivamente el más memorable.

   La pelea con Shelob es uno de los capítulos del libro que no podías dejar de leer hasta terminarlo, cuando creías que todo se había perdido llega Sam con 'la luz de Earendil' y Sting, podías imaginarte la desesperación y miedo que sentía el personaje al enfrentarse a este horrible y gigante monstruo. De mis capítulos favoritos de todo el libro sin duda.

     Frodo's faithful friend. I spent a few days out of town but returned with one of the most memorable scenes from both the book and the film. It is curious that Sam Gamgee (Sean Astin), unlike the other hobbits, didn't have an English accent and I don't think it was due to lack of skill, it is kind of a mistery to me. Beyond that, I think he did a good job, it was a very demanding role in the emotional and physical aspect, unlike many others parts he has played throughout his career. Definitely the most memorable.
    The fight with Shelob is one of the chapters of the book you could not stop reading,when you thought all was lost Sam grabs 'the light of Earendil' and Sting to pick up a fight. You could imagine the desperation and fear that goes through his body once he encounters this big horrible monster. Still, he fights. Definitely one of my favorite chapters of the entire book.

En la clase de ilustración digital les mencioné a mis alumnos que el cabello en los personajes es un buen pretexto para añadir dinamismo a la imagen y creo que se me quedó grabado hasta hoy. Cuando veo personajes pequeños con piel azul me recuerda a Akira, ya que en la película salen unos monos que aparentan poca edad por su estatura y proporción, pero están arrugados y viejos, muy incómodos y extraños a la vista, pero quiero suponer que esa era la intención inicial de éstos. Cual sea el caso, son feos por donde le busques.

In digital illustration class I mentioned to my students that hair on characters is a good excuse to add dynamism to the image and I think that stuck with me until today. When I see small characters with blue skin reminds me of Akira, because of some characters in the film that appear to be young with kid-like proportions and stature, but actually they are wrinkled and old, uncomfortable and strange at sight. I want to think that was the original intention of these. Whatever the case, they are really ugly.

CIC Museo // Ilustración libro infantil • Children's book illustration

El Centro de Investigaciones Culturales (CIC) y Museo de la Universidad de Baja California nos invitaron a mi amigo y colega Arturo Jáuregui a ilustrar una serie de libros infantiles que buscan fortalecer de manera educativa el conocimiento de Baja California entre la comunidad infantil de la ciudad de Mexicali. En esta ocasión se realizó un pequeño libro basado en un cuento de Alberto Tapia Landeros, investigador y maestro reconocido que publicó el cuento por primera vez en 1981 en un periódico local. "El nacimiento" narra la historia de la familia que fundó el municipio de Mexicali. Los personajes fueron diseñados por Arturo y me tocó darles vida en algunas cuantas imágenes. El relato trae una narrativa ligera, soñadora y algo poética, por lo que las imágenes tenían que expresar ese mismo estilo. La publicación la podrán adquirir en el CIC Museo dentro de un par de meses y publicaré cuando sea el evento de lanzamiento.

Cultural Investigation Center (CIC) and Museum of the University of Baja California invited me and my friend/colleague Arturo Jauregui to work in a children's book collection that seeks to strengthen the education and knowledge of Baja California. We were given the task to illustrate a short story by Alberto Tapia Landeros, renowned researcher and teacher who published the story back in 1981 in a local newspaper. "El nacimiento" ( which means "birth" or  "nativity") tells the story of the family that founded the town of Mexicali, Baja California's capital city. The characters were designed by Arturo and I had the chance to give life to them in a few images. The story narrative is light, dreamy and a bit poetic, and the images had to convey that same style.
