daily doodle 16: Merry & Pippin

Estos dos son el escape cómico de la trilogía, al menos en las primeras dos películas. Llegados por mera casualidad, estos dos personajes agregan valor al mensaje de la amistad que Frodo y Sam comunican. Lo interesante de esta relación es que sucede una ruptura después del capítulo de Treebeard y toman caminos distintos, cada uno creciendo emocionalmente por su lado: Merry en Rohan y Pippin en Minas Tirith.

These two are the comic relief of the trilogy, at least in the first two films. These two add value to the message of friendship that Frodo and Sam live, but the interesting thing about this relationship is that they take different paths after the chapter of Treebeard, each one growing emotionally by their own will: Merry in Rohan and Pippin in the city of Minas Tirith.

daily doodle 15: Samwise the brave

   El fiel amigo de Frodo. Estuve unos días fuera de la ciudad pero regreso con una de las escenas más memorables del libro y de la película. Es curioso que Sam (Sean Astin), a diferencia de los otros hobbits, no imita un acento inglés y no creo que haya sido por falta de habilidad. Fuera de eso, creo que hizo un buen trabajo, era un personaje muy exigente en cuestión de emociones y actividad física, a diferencia de otros tantos que ha hecho a lo largo de su carrera. Definitivamente el más memorable.

   La pelea con Shelob es uno de los capítulos del libro que no podías dejar de leer hasta terminarlo, cuando creías que todo se había perdido llega Sam con 'la luz de Earendil' y Sting, podías imaginarte la desesperación y miedo que sentía el personaje al enfrentarse a este horrible y gigante monstruo. De mis capítulos favoritos de todo el libro sin duda.

     Frodo's faithful friend. I spent a few days out of town but returned with one of the most memorable scenes from both the book and the film. It is curious that Sam Gamgee (Sean Astin), unlike the other hobbits, didn't have an English accent and I don't think it was due to lack of skill, it is kind of a mistery to me. Beyond that, I think he did a good job, it was a very demanding role in the emotional and physical aspect, unlike many others parts he has played throughout his career. Definitely the most memorable.
    The fight with Shelob is one of the chapters of the book you could not stop reading,when you thought all was lost Sam grabs 'the light of Earendil' and Sting to pick up a fight. You could imagine the desperation and fear that goes through his body once he encounters this big horrible monster. Still, he fights. Definitely one of my favorite chapters of the entire book.

Frodo es el verdadero protagonista de El Señor de los Anillos. Por manejar a veces hasta 5 caminos dentro de la historia, Tolkien nos hacía pensar que Frodo había muerto en algún lugar e incluso acelerabas la lectura para poder regresar a sus capítulos. Esto no le restaba importancia a Aragorn, Gandalf y los demás, porque finalmente lo que creaban era tiempo para que Frodo cumpliera con su misión. Como todo antihéroe, Frodo no es perfecto, comete errores y se transforma a medida que la historia acaba.

Frodo is the true protagonist of The Lord of the Rings. Driving sometimes up to five story lines,  Tolkien made ​​us think that Frodo had died somewhere and that forced us to accelerate our reading in order to return to his chapters. This does not downgrade Aragorn, Gandalf and the others, because you feel a connection between them, so you realize that they are buying time for Frodo to fulfill his mission. For me it is a very powerful concept that one so small could do this incredible task. Like any antihero, Frodo is not perfect, he makes mistakes and suffers from an addiction that consumes him until the end of the story. 

daily doodle 12: Legolas

Ni tan diarios estos bocetos. Había empezado éste pero no me di el tiempo de terminarlo hasta hoy. Este personaje me daba curiosidad ver cómo saldría en la película, me gustaba la manera en que lo conocías a través de la amistad/rivalidad con Gimli y su vibra melancólica y misteriosa. En la película está bien caracterizado, su traje y aspecto físico, pero en actuación se nota que fue éste fue el primer papel serio de Orlando Bloom. Forma parte de excelentes escenas de acción y de un par de malísimos chistes.

Not so daily sketches but, finally here's a new one. Legolas was one of the characters in the book that I was looking forward to see in film, definitely you knew more about him due to the friendship/rivalry with Gimli and his melancholic and mysterious feeling. In the film, I think it is well characterized, the costume and physical appearance, but in acting performance it was noticeable that this was the first significant role for Orlando Bloom. He is part of excellent action scenes and a couple of lousy jokes.

daily doodle 10: Gandalf the grey

Este personaje no necesita presentación. En las películas, se dice que Ian Mckellen estuvo imitando la voz de Tolkien para interpretar a su personaje así como su lenguaje corporal, de tal forma que pudiéramos asimilar que Gandalf es Tolkien a través del actor.

This character needs no introduction. In the film, it is said that Ian McKellen was imitating the voice and body language of Tolkien to play his character, so we could say that Tolkien is Gandalf himself through the actor.

daily doodle 9: Gollum

El hobbit caído. Me gustó como al leer El Hobbit te dabas cuenta que algo interesante había con Gollum. Por su redacción, no lo sentías tan amenazante, lo imaginaba como una criatura que solo quería jugar —de una manera algo enferma— y que era un personaje sencillo y secundario. El Señor de los Anillos lo lleva a otro nivel, es un protagónico complejo, vicioso, adicto y esquizofrénico. Andy Serkis logró posicionarlo en la película, no te puedes imaginar alguien más que pudiera interpretar tan bien al personaje como él lo hizo, así como todos los animadores detrás de él.

The fallen Hobbit. I liked when reading The Hobbit you realized that something interesting was going on with Gollum. I guess that for the children's book narrative, you do not feel him so threatening, I imagined him as a creature who only wanted to play—in a sick way—, and it was a simple and secondary character. The Lord of the Rings takes him to another level, it is a complex protagonist, vicious, addict and schizophrenic. Andy Serkis was able to give life to him in the film, and I can't imagine anyone else who could play the character so well as he did and all the animators behind him.

daily doodle 8 - Saruman the White

Hacía buen tiempo que no dibujaba algo de El Señor de los Anillos, un par de bocetos a lápiz en viejos cuadernos es lo único que recuerdo tener por ahi. Siento que Saruman fue el villano más importante de la historia o al menos el que podías visualizar físicamente, pero en el último capítulo del libro sentí que Tolkien le dio un bajón a la fuerza del personaje al ir a Hobbiton y ver qué alboroto hacer. En el cine, Christopher Lee logró una interpretación buenísima, Solo con la voz te transmite mucha fuerza y autoridad, es uno de mis personajes favoritos, realmente impresionante. Y bien, dejo este boceto que está basado en el diseño de la película, que considero toda una joyita.

 It's been a long time since I did something about The Lord of the Rings, maybe a couple of drawings in old sketch books is all that I remember. I feel that Saruman was the villain of the story or at least the one you could visualize physically, but in the last chapter I felt that Tolkien downgraded the strength of character when he went to Hobbiton and enslave the villagers . In the movies, Christopher Lee was incredible, only the sound of his voice conveys great strength and authority, very impressive and is actually one of my favorite characters. Well, this sketch is really based on the film's character design, which I think is incredible.

Para mi sorpresa, hace poco recibí un correo de una persona preguntándome si tenía impresiones de la ilustración de Leono de Thundercats que hice hace un par de años, ya que la había visto en la exposición que se hizo en aquel entonces (2009) en el CETYS Mexicali. Fue muy halagador que alguien me contactara especialmente para esto, sobretodo porque se tomó el tiempo de buscar este blog.  Con gusto respondí que por el momento no tenía, pero que podía reimprimirla y enviársela por paquetería.

Espero que la disfrute tanto como lo fue hacer esta ilustración.

To my surprise, I recently received an email from someone asking if I was printing the illustration of Lion-o from Thundercats that I made a couple of years, since it was seen in the art exhibition back in 2009 at CETYS University, in Mexicali. It was very flattering that someone contacted me especially for this, and for the invested time it took to find this blog. I gladly answered that I could print a copy and send it.

Ilustraciones ochenteras • 80's illustrations pt. 2

Lo prometido es deuda y les dejo la otra parte de las ilustraciones de las caricaturas ochenteras. 

Candy Candy, sino fue la primera, una de las caricaturas anime más dramáticas narrada a manera de telenovela. Cambiar la manera ‘real’ de relatar una historia evolucionó con su aparición; la mayor parte de las veces pensabas ¿qué otra cosa le puede pasar para empeorar su vida? Definitivamente una serie apegada a una realidad muy cruda.

Los cazafantasmas siempre fue una serie ingeniosa, sobretodo en el diseño de las criaturas y los ambientes en los que habitaban. El intro hasta el día de hoy es de los más clásicos tanto por su canción como por su animación. No tardó mucho en convertirse en un fenómeno pop y comercial.

As promised, here's the other part of the eighties cartoons illustrations.
Candy Candy, one of the most dramatic cartoons ever seen, and quite different for its time because of its tragic storytelling, it had this feeling of ''what else can happen to this girl?''. This anime definitely changed the way an animated series should be told.
Ghostbusters was always an ingenious cartoon, especially in the design of the creatures and the environments in which they lived. The intro to this day is the most classic both for its music as for its animation. Did not take long to become a commercial and pop phenomenon.

Ilustraciones ochenteras • 80's illustrations pt.1

Las caricaturas de los años ochenta inculcaron muchísimos valores en los niños que nacieron en esa década y que hoy en día están entre sus años veinte y treintas. Algunas eran muy sangrientas, violentas, otras muy estúpidas, pero finalmente tenían un mensaje, soluciones y consejos que podían servirles a la audiencia y que ayudaban a identificarte con los personajes. Son enseñanzas que aun después dos o tres décadas siguen vigentes.

Les dejo estas ilustraciones que de hecho ya tienen un par de años mas no las había subido en este blog. Sería interesante saber de qué manera afectaron estas caricaturas a algunos de ustedes. Las imágenes corresponden a Los Thundercats y los Snorkels (los pitufos marinos), pero aun quedan algunas que subiré en el siguiente post de la semana. ¡Estén al pendiente!

Eighties cartoons inspired many values ​​in children who lived in that decade and today are among their twenties and thirties. Some were very bloody, violent, sometimes very stupid, but finally they had a messages and advice to everyday problems and more importantly, the audience identified with those characters. These are lessons that even after two or three decades are educational.

I did these illustrations a couple of years ago but did not post in this blog. It would be interesting to know how these cartoons affected some of you! These images are from The Thundercats and The Snorkels (the sea-smurfs), but I still have 3 more to upload. Stay tuned!
