Thundercats poster

Para mi sorpresa, hace poco recibí un correo de una persona preguntándome si tenía impresiones de la ilustración de Leono de Thundercats que hice hace un par de años, ya que la había visto en la exposición que se hizo en aquel entonces (2009) en el CETYS Mexicali. Fue muy halagador que alguien me contactara especialmente para esto, sobretodo porque se tomó el tiempo de buscar este blog.  Con gusto respondí que por el momento no tenía, pero que podía reimprimirla y enviársela por paquetería.

Espero que la disfrute tanto como lo fue hacer esta ilustración.

To my surprise, I recently received an email from someone asking if I was printing the illustration of Lion-o from Thundercats that I made a couple of years, since it was seen in the art exhibition back in 2009 at CETYS University, in Mexicali. It was very flattering that someone contacted me especially for this, and for the invested time it took to find this blog. I gladly answered that I could print a copy and send it.

I hope you enjoy it as much as it was to create this illustration.

Afortunadamente he podido hacer un poco de tiempo los domingos para dedicarme a trabajo personal. Les dejo esta ocasión la ilustración del día; se tomó de referencia la palabra "circo" y me imaginé como podría ser una relación entre dos personajes dentro de este ambiente. Me pareció interesante hacer una imagen tierna como contraparte de la cansada vida que deben llevar los animales, veo esta escena como parte de la relajación y alivio después de terminar un largo día de trabajo. 

La práctica me llevó a pensar cómo los grandes circos del mundo como el Ringlin' Bros. recurren al maltrato animal, visiten esta página para conocer más de este gran problema.

Fortunately I have been able to make some time on Sundays and be devoted to personal work. This time I did an illustration having the word "circus" as reference. So I kind of imagined a relationship between two characters in this environment. I found it interesting to make a tender image as a counterpart of the hard life that animals must have and I see this scene as a relief after a long day's work.

The practice led me to think how the big circuses of the world such as the Ringlin'Bros. resort to animal cruelty, visit this website to learn more about this major problem.

CIC Museo // Ilustración libro infantil • Children's book illustration

El Centro de Investigaciones Culturales (CIC) y Museo de la Universidad de Baja California nos invitaron a mi amigo y colega Arturo Jáuregui a ilustrar una serie de libros infantiles que buscan fortalecer de manera educativa el conocimiento de Baja California entre la comunidad infantil de la ciudad de Mexicali. En esta ocasión se realizó un pequeño libro basado en un cuento de Alberto Tapia Landeros, investigador y maestro reconocido que publicó el cuento por primera vez en 1981 en un periódico local. "El nacimiento" narra la historia de la familia que fundó el municipio de Mexicali. Los personajes fueron diseñados por Arturo y me tocó darles vida en algunas cuantas imágenes. El relato trae una narrativa ligera, soñadora y algo poética, por lo que las imágenes tenían que expresar ese mismo estilo. La publicación la podrán adquirir en el CIC Museo dentro de un par de meses y publicaré cuando sea el evento de lanzamiento.

Cultural Investigation Center (CIC) and Museum of the University of Baja California invited me and my friend/colleague Arturo Jauregui to work in a children's book collection that seeks to strengthen the education and knowledge of Baja California. We were given the task to illustrate a short story by Alberto Tapia Landeros, renowned researcher and teacher who published the story back in 1981 in a local newspaper. "El nacimiento" ( which means "birth" or  "nativity") tells the story of the family that founded the town of Mexicali, Baja California's capital city. The characters were designed by Arturo and I had the chance to give life to them in a few images. The story narrative is light, dreamy and a bit poetic, and the images had to convey that same style.

Cortometraje animado ''La oscuridad te habla'' • Animated shortfilm

El proyecto actual de Lapis Lázuli (la empresa formada por 2 colegas y yo) se trata de un cortometraje animado titulado "La oscuridad te habla", un cuento de misterio original del escritor Gabriel Trujillo que hemos estado en producción desde inicios de año, y trata sobre la leyenda del fantasma de la carretera que regionalmente conocemos. Hace algunos meses subí unos fondos para animación que precisamente son para este cortometraje, y aprovecho para compartir uno más. El cortometraje está en sus últimas etapas de producción para pasar a postproducción y terminarlo por fin y aunque ha sido un trabajo muy muy demandante de tiempo y esfuerzo, los resultados serán buenos. El look final que está tomando el cortometraje es algo que se ha visto poco al menos en Mexicali.

The current project of Lapis Lazuli (the company formed by two colleagues and I) is an animated short titled "La oscuridad te habla" (directly translates to 'Darkness speaks to you' which does not sound very good) an original mystery tale by science fiction and fantasy writer Gabriel Trujillo. We have been in production since the beginning of the year and the tale generally talks about  'the ghost of the road', which is a regionally well-known myth. Some months ago I submitted some animation backgrounds that are precisely for this short film, and this time i wanted to share another one. The film is in its final stages of production so we can move to postprod and finally end the project.

Ilustraciones ochenteras • 80's illustrations pt. 2

Lo prometido es deuda y les dejo la otra parte de las ilustraciones de las caricaturas ochenteras. 

Candy Candy, sino fue la primera, una de las caricaturas anime más dramáticas narrada a manera de telenovela. Cambiar la manera ‘real’ de relatar una historia evolucionó con su aparición; la mayor parte de las veces pensabas ¿qué otra cosa le puede pasar para empeorar su vida? Definitivamente una serie apegada a una realidad muy cruda.

Los cazafantasmas siempre fue una serie ingeniosa, sobretodo en el diseño de las criaturas y los ambientes en los que habitaban. El intro hasta el día de hoy es de los más clásicos tanto por su canción como por su animación. No tardó mucho en convertirse en un fenómeno pop y comercial.

As promised, here's the other part of the eighties cartoons illustrations.
Candy Candy, one of the most dramatic cartoons ever seen, and quite different for its time because of its tragic storytelling, it had this feeling of ''what else can happen to this girl?''. This anime definitely changed the way an animated series should be told.
Ghostbusters was always an ingenious cartoon, especially in the design of the creatures and the environments in which they lived. The intro to this day is the most classic both for its music as for its animation. Did not take long to become a commercial and pop phenomenon.
